A MIAM, or Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting, is the first step in the family mediation process in the UK.
It’s a preliminary meeting where a qualified mediator will explain how mediation works, discuss your situation, and assess whether mediation is suitable for your case.
It is usually required by courts that you attend a MIAM before filing court papers.
The MIAM is a requirement for anyone considering court action for family matters, such as divorce, child arrangements, or financial disputes. It aims to encourage mediation as a way to resolve conflicts without going to court. Courts require that you attend a MIAM before filing most types of family-related applications, although there are exceptions (e.g., cases involving domestic abuse or child protection issues).
